Explicitly considering regional species pools can help to understand community assembly rules, because it plays a bridging role in elucidating how community patterns are coupled at local and regional scales. By conducting the nationwide soilsurvey from various ecosystems across China, we examined the linkage between regional species pool size and DSRs, and their relationship to fungal community structure. We found significantly negative dispersal-selection relationships in all four ecosystems. Additionally, regional species pool size was negatively related to dispersal-selection relationships. In other words, the slope of the dispersal-selection relationships become steeper with increasing regional species pool size, suggesting that the regional species pool regulates the balance between dispersal and selection in community assembly. The strengthening of the dispersal-selection relationship significantly increased the dispersion of fungal communities. This study clearly illustrates the crucial role of regional species pools in community assembly rules and extends the species-pool framework to microbial community ecology.
